US Grand Strategy Conference 

held by the Roosevelt Institute's Defense and Diplomacy Policy Center

at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

April 10-11, 2010 

What is the future of U.S. Grand Strategy in a changing global landscape?

The Roosevelt Institute's US Grand Strategy Conference will focus on addressing this question by examining the themes of Natural Security and Sustainable Security as tools for conceptualizing U.S. grand strategy. The conference will include workshops, policy strategy sessions, presentations, and networking opportunities with individuals from the Center for a New American Security, National Security Network, Truman National Security Project, and other organizations.

Major General Paul D. Eaton 

 
Major General Paul D. Eaton served more than 30 years in the United States Army, including combat and post-combat assignments in Iraq, Bosnia and Somalia. As a major general he was assigned to Iraq as Commanding General of the Coalition Military Assistance Training Team (CMATT), where he developed, designed and began the training of the Iraqi military and security forces from 2003 to 2004. Eaton has appeared on Hardball, Face the Nation, and Tavis Smiley discussing US national security and human rights policy. In 2008 Eaton served as an advisor to Senator Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign. 
 

James A. Morin

 
James Morin practices in the firm’s Project and International Finance group, with an emphasis on policy-driven government finance for business transactions. Example transactions include the first power plant to be undertaken in post-war Liberia, water development in Ghana, an Iraqi company’s claim under the Foreign Claims Act, funding a microfinance bank in Afghanistan, as well as a series of Export-Import Bank direct loans for the purchase of Sikorsky helicopters. Prior to joining Hogan & Hartson, James served as an Infantry Officer in the U.S. Army for six years. As a veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan, he maintains a strong interest in international development and national security.
 

Christine Parthemore 

 
Christine Parthemore is the Bacevich Fellow at the Center for a New American Security (CNAS), where she contributes primarily to the Natural Security Program and the Natural Security Blog. She is the author of The Obama Plan for Energy and Climate Security: Conference Proceedings and Final Recommendations and co-author of Iran: Assessing U.S. Strategic Options; Uncharted Waters: The U.S. Navy and Navigating Climate Change; and A Strategy for American Power: Energy, Climate, and National Security. She also co-authored a chapter in the 2008 book Climatic Cataclysm: The Foreign Policy and National Security Implications of Global Climate Change. Prior to joining CNAS, she worked as an assistant to journalist Bob Woodward on State of Denial: Bush at War Part III and The Secret Man: The Story of Watergate's Deep Throat. Her research covered a broad range of American foreign and defense policy, the war on terror, and the Iraq War. She has contributed to The Washington Post and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Parthemore has a B.A. in political science from The Ohio State University and is a graduate student in Georgetown University's Security Studies Program.
